How much do I trust TV evangelists? Not much would be an understatement!
I get very fatigued of their constant money grubbing. If the Bible, referred to the giving of money so that certain preachers could live large, have mega-mansions, drive Rolls-Royce and Bentley's, and fly in the world's finest private jets; then nobody would pay any attention to it.
I am continuously hearing, "we need $1 million this month or we will no longer be able to be on TV!" I say this, if God wanted you on TV, He would make sure that you had provision to be on TV.
It seems to me, that the bulk of their message deals with the raising of funds. "Sow your seed, and get your miracle." I hear this in one form or another consistently throughout the majority of TV messages.
I have never heard Billy Graham plead for not a single penny in all the years I have watched him. Yet, no man in the 20th century has brought more souls to Jesus Christ then this man. He lived a quiet, simple lifestyle in the mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina.
Billy was scheduled to preach one week in Madison Square Garden but due to overwhelming demand he remained there for 16 weeks and thousands upon thousands of souls were saved! Money was never the object with Billy Graham, nor Smith Wigglesworth, in other true men of the Gospel.
However, many are wolves in sheep's clothing.
Every believer has a responsibility to support his local church---first and foremost. This is where he gets fed, receives fellowship from other fellow believers, actually has real live people who can help him in time of great personal need.
It is my sincere opinion, that if one is going to give to a TV ministry, that they should do their homework. First, there needs to be financial transparency as to the use of the money, the purpose of the money, and the total amount of money needed! If a TV ministry is unwilling to be transparent, then run like a bunny."Why should I give you my money if you are not going to reveal it's use?"
Many, not all, of these TV evangelists have found an easy way to become wealthy. If you hear a request for funds that is greater than the number six during a 30 minute segment, beware. Money is the message. God will meet your needs, but money is not His priority. Matters of the heart are; love is the greatest of all.
I remember watching him Richard and Lindsay Roberts, and Richard saying, "sow your seed and get your miracle!" I remember thinking what an abomination that statement was; Richard was in essence selling miracles. I immediately turned off the TV and have not watched those folks since.
To say that all TV evangelists are money grubbers would be unfair and untrue. There are many who teach the true Word; and do great works with the funds that have been donated to their ministries. James and Betty Robison come to mind as doing great work in Third World nations concerning food, water, housing, and health----and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ's.
So be discerning in your TV giving, you may be supporting the work of the devil. As I have said not all are bad, but not all are good as well. Just because they are on TV doesn't make them right or anymore annointed then your dog.
I may sound like I watch no TV evangelists, not true, I watch occasionally Andrew Womack, David Jeremiah, and a very few others. To me, the Word trumps everything else for spiritual growth, not man. If I have a question, I go to my pastor.
I appreciate the kind words about my parents. Thought you might be interested in my article, "Why Does Christian TV Suck?" at http://www.randyrobison.com/christiantv.html
